Information and Technology Literacy
Future Action Items

The Information & Technology Literacy Summit was a great success in raising awareness, starting a conversation on the campus (and beyond), and endorsing some follow-up actions:
  1. Offering CSE 100 - Fluency in Information Technology. This first course, by Prof. Larry Snyder's course is designed for undergraduates in Spring 1999 quarter. The goals are to test out the IT fluency model and make recommendations for future versions of this course and other offerings. It is the central academic embodiment of the NRC information fluency report and will provide guidance for all efforts at the UW.

  2. Raising awareness of the issues, concerns, and need for information & technology literacy/fluency learning opportunities across the campus. Someone spoke about "mobilizing the departments and faculty."

  3. Publicizing information and technology literacy/fluency across the campus and in the broader community.

  4. Developing future offerings of CSE 100 and other courses based on the information fluency model. For example, the School of Library and Information Science is working in conjunction with UWired, CSE, University Libraries and academic units on possible information & technology courses for the Fall 1999 and beyond. Various configurations of courses will be tried.

  5. Continuing campus-wide discussions of information & technology literacy/fluency.

  6. Expanding discussions and projects to the broader community (K-12, higher education, public).
