Our next ALL DAY group meeting will be held on Aug. 31( Click for Details , Slides: Biomaterials I; Biomaterials II; Sensors; Simulations & Fundamentals; Group Discussion ). Dr. Shaoyi Jiang received a Technology Gap Innovation Fund Award from the UW to develop and test a marine coating paint made with highly effective non-fouling compounds that are non-toxic to the environment, unlike metal-based paints currently used to coat marine vessels (2006). Allen Taylor was awarded the Intel Foundation PhD Fellowship Award (2006-2008). Matt Bernards was awarded an IGERT fellowship from the UW Center for Nanotechnology (2006-2007) for his work on "Development of a Novel Nanopattern-Enhanced Arrayed SPR Biosensor for Early Cancer Detection". Tim Chao was awarded a Clayton and Helen Danner Scholarship from the UW College of Engineering (2006-2007) and a UWEB Undergraduate Scholars in Research Program (USIRP) award (2006-2007). Matt Bernards was awarded a Student Travel Achievement Recognition (STAR) Award from the Society for Biomaterials to present his work entitled "Controlling and Probing Protein Orientation/Conformation for Biomaterial Applications" at their annual meeting (2006). Matt Bernards, Jason Hower, and Zheng Zhang were awarded Graduate School Fund for Excellence and Innovation (GSFEI) awards from the UW Graduate School to present at the Society for Biomaterials annual meeting (2006). Gang Cheng was awarded the D.D. Drowley Award and the Runstad Family Award, respectively, from the Department of Chemical Engineering (2005-2006). Jason Hower was awarded the Jane and Joseph McCarthy Excellence in Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Teaching (2005-2006). Tim Chao was awarded a Mary Gates Research Training Grant (2005). Christy Boozer was awarded the Intel Foundation PhD Fellowship Award (2004-2005). Jason Hower was the recipient of an Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Fellowship (2004-2007) Lingyun Liu , co-supervised by Buddy Ratner, was one of the two recipients of the David J. Lee Student Poster Award at the 2003 Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation meeting in Savannah, Georgia. The title of her poster was "Controlling Osteopontin Behavior on Surfaces for Endothelial Cell Adhesion." Christy Boozer won second place in the Biomaterials Interfaces student poster competition at the 2003 AVS meeting in Baltimore. Her poster was titled poster “DNA Directed Protein Immobilization for Multi-Channel SPR Biosensors.” Jie Zheng was awarded a Graduate Student Fellowships from the UW center for Nanotechnology (2003-2004) for his work on“Non-Fouling Mechanism: A Molecular Simulations Study.” Matt Bernards was the recipient of an Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Fellowship (2003-2006). Christy Boozer was awarded the Ford Motor Company Fellowship (2003-2004). Jim Sullivan was awarded the Runstad Family Fellowship (2003-2004).
