This part of the web site has been created for the purpose of disseminating
information used in the development of EPA guidelines for the assessment
of dermal exposure to soil-bound chemicals. In order to assist in the EPA's
effort to provide the general public with increased access to the data upon
which their guidance is based, our lab is using this web site as a means
to present both summary and raw data collected from EPA-sponsored projects
we have conducted over the last four years.
This section presents soil loading (or soil adherence) values resulting from a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational and occupational activities (e.g., playing soccer and rugby, gardening, and farming). The two rounds of field studies involved washing various body parts (hands, arms, legs, faces, and feet) of volunteers prior to and immediately following the activity. In total, there were 200 volunteers, 143 of whom were adults (ages >15) and 57 of whom were children (ages 1-15). The 139 male and 61 female participants represented 34 different groups and 17 separate activites. More detailed descriptions of the methodology used as well as of the different activity groups can be found in Kissel et al. (1996) and Holmes et al. (submitted for publication) (both are listed in the Publications section of this web site).
This first page provides you with an outline of this section of our web site. By simply clicking on any of the keyword(s) of interest, you will be able to view images illustrating various aspects of these studies or published abstracts included on linked pages. Gravimetric soil loading data for all of the volunteer groups will be posted here in the future.
