Greenhouse Studies Page

This part of the web site contains data collected from dermal exposure experiments we conducted in a greenhouse. There were three sets of volunteers:

Adult Pipe-layers: adult volunteers who were given plastic pipe, fittings, a trowel, and a plan of the desired piping layout and were told to construct the said layout;
Adult Transplanters: adult volunteers who were given a trowel and instructed to transplant 14 plants; and
Children Playing: child volunteers who were given an assortment of toys (trucks and figures) and implements (a trowel and a scoop made from the bottom of a 2-liter drink bottle).

Transplanters and children performed their tasks in a 8'x8' soil bed that was prepared by using 6"x6" landscaping timbers and lined with a plastic tarp before placement of soil. For the adult pipe-layers, the bed was deepened by adding a second row of timbers and additional soil was added.

Pre- and post-activity gravimetric soil loading data for adult pipe-layers and children playing are posted for review and download at this site.
