Soil Contact Page

Characterization of human dermal contact with soil has been a major activity
in our laboratory over the past several years. A listing of the published
journal articles can be found in the Publications
portion of this web site. These articles are prominently cited in EPA guidance
documents.
Four different types of studies have been conducted:
- Laboratory: bench studies using a hand-press technique;
- Greenhouse: studies conducted in a greenhouse using a bed of
soil amended with a fluorescent marker;
- Field: studies of soil contact in unscripted, real-world activities;
and
- Phone Surveys: Surveys of activity and behavioral patterns relevant
to dermal contact with soil.
