Jumpstart is a leading national nonprofit organization working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.  Since 1993, we’ve been bringing at-risk preschool children and college students together through one-to-one mentoring relationships to build the language, literacy, and social skills necessary to succeed not just in school, but also in life.

About Jumpstart Seattle at the University of Washington

Jumpstart Seattle at the University of Washington was launched in September of 2003 as a collaborative effort between Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, the College of Education, and the Work Study Office. Since 2003, UW undergraduates have worked with Seattle preschool children through the Jumpstart program. Jumpstart is one of seven programs housed in The Center for Experiential Learning within Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Our Mission

Jumpstart Seattle at the University of Washington trains and supports teams of UW undergraduates in their efforts help low-income children in preschool classrooms build language, literacy, social and initiative skills.  The program allows undergraduates to explore the world of early childhood education, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, and increase their awareness of the diverse communities they serve.

Our Vision

Jumpstart Seattle at the University of Washington will work to bring awareness about the importance of early childhood education both on the university campus and in the community. On campus, Jumpstart will develop and strengthen relationships with UW departments to improve access to academic experiences related to early childhood.  Jumpstart will be a resource for undergraduates seeking opportunities to develop themselves personally, further their academic interests, engage as future preschool educators, or become advocates for early learning.  Jumpstart seeks to recruit students and staff members with diverse backgrounds and experiences to contribute to our work, and in turn provide them with opportunities to serve diverse communities.  Jumpstart will engage in ongoing dialogue with our preschool and community partners to meet the needs of the children and families we serve.
