I got involved with Jumpstart as a sophomore in 2004. I was hired as a Team leader and worked at Denise Louie Education Center in the International District and Beacon Hill for 3 years. As an undergrad, Jumpstart gave me a community to belong to. You couldn’t miss those bright blue shirts all over campus; especially not in large crowds of people!

I learned about leadership through team leader meetings, facilitating weekly team meetings, presenting at staff trainings, various public speaking events such as freshman orientation and the high achievers receptions as well as representing Jumpstart to the new Vice Provost. I have great memories from the team leader conferences in Anaheim. 8 years later, I am still close friends with my fellow teammates.

Finally, Jumpstart gave me the opportunity to meet with Senator Patty Murray both in my Seattle classroom and in Washington D.C at a constituent breakfast to discuss the importance of early childhood education. All of these opportunities have allowed me to realize how important it is to not only work with, but also advocate for marginalized communities. Currently I am in the UW School of Social Work MSW program and I can thank Jumpstart for helping me discover my passion for working with diverse populations and allowing me the opportunity gain hands on experience while making a difference in the lives of children.

I joined Jumpstart because of my love for children and interest in teaching. I knew this program would give me the experience I needed to become an effective teacher, but I wasn’t expecting to be introduced to the vast possibilities of potential careers within the education system. Jumpstart trains its corps members for successful careers in child psychology, social services, early childhood curriculum development, and teaching. The program not only trained me for those potential career choices, but it also gave me the field experience needed to get a true feel of what it means to be a childcare provider and advocate.

Throughout my service I formed great friendships, networks, and strong leadership skills. The support of the staff and consistent communication between the management and team leaders allowed me to strengthen my leadership skills phenomenally. I gained a better knowledge of what it means to work with children in developmentally appropriate ways and then I put that knowledge to use in the classroom. Also, because Jumpstart is a community based program I was able to connect with members of the Seattle area outside of the university community, which has helped me to relate to those that I would like to continue working with.

I’m now working as an instructional assistant through City Year, where I work with a group of energetic and talented third graders who both challenge and bring me great joy on a daily basis. Part of my job consists of me creating academic interventions, as well as creating age appropriate activities for young children. As a result of my service with Jumpstart, I have a confidence in the methods I use when I work with children. I believe that the combination of the consistent guidance and quality of leadership that the site managers displayed has not only prepared for a career in education, but it has also given me the skills needed to be a successful young adult.

“Wow, congratulations Jumpstart. I don’t think this would be possible without people like you, Daniel, and Sarah doing all you do.

My role is with Jumpstart began in 2010 as a team leader. One of my earliest memories of the Jumpstart program is beginning to build new found friendships with other team leaders and my team corps members. My involvement with the Jumpstart program has truly shown me what it really means to serve others altruistically in our communities who really need programs like Jumpstart to make a difference in the lives of young children. Jumpstart has impacted my life in so many ways. I am truly grateful for the Jumpstart program for its continuous work to help others. I will continue my work in society to serve others in my communities as the program has taught me how.

Thank you Jumpstart for all the great work you do!”

“I initially became involved with Jumpstart my freshman year of college as a Corps Member at DLEC in the International District and subsequently became a Team Leader.

Some of my best memories are getting to be silly! Basically I could act like a kid and not get weird stares. Ha-ha! I think Jumpstart allowed me to realize how much I’m actually a big kid at heart. My first memories included learning the song “Baby Shark” and while it wasn’t a song I sang while I was a preschooler it quickly became one of my favorites. I have a laundry list of other songs that I find myself inadvertently humming during the day. It’s always a kicker when attending doctors with small children ask “Why is that tune so familiar?”

Once in awhile when I’m in the International District or really anywhere in Seattle, I’ll bump into some old students. Some will recognize me, some won’t but either way it’s always nice to see their bright smiles and think that I made an impact on their lives no matter how minute.

Jumpstart allowed me to find and pursue my passion, medicine. I realized during my time at Jumpstart that very often that the educational success of my students was not only access to a good education but also to good health care. I love that medicine combined my passion for science as well as my passion to educate and work with families. I’m in my third year of medical school now and while I’m not 100% sure what I want to do “when I grow up” I hope that it will bring me the same feelings of joy and accomplishment as I had while working with Jumpstart!”
