“When Jumpstart first launched at the University of Washington during the Fall of 2003 there were less than 20 undergraduates working in a handful of Head Start classrooms. It is exciting to see how the program has continued to grow both on campus and in the Seattle community! I feel grateful to have been one of many people who contributed to that effort over the years. I have countless Jumpstart memories to share, but my favorite memories are of undergraduate students reading stories with children in the classroom. I always felt inspired by seeing the excitement on the faces of preschool children when Corps Members would read their favorite books over and over again. At the heart of the program were Corps Members helping children to develop a love of reading and learning…this was one of the things that I enjoyed the most about my time with Jumpstart.
Many undergraduates also discovered their interest in education and their talent for teaching young children while they were in Jumpstart. This was in large part due to the amazing classroom teachers who mentored Jumpstart Corps Members over the years. I was always in awe of the dedicated Head Start teachers we partnered with and was inspired by the way they encouraged Corps Members to develop their skills in the classroom. I learned so much from the teachers we partnered with and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with them.”
