Barnes and Noble Book Drive

Jumpstart will be holding a bookfair at Barnes & Noble in University Village on Saturday, November 8th & Sunday, November 9th!

To contribute, come to Barnes & Noble on Saturday or Sunday, grab a voucher at our Jumpstart table upstairs (or download one below), and present it at check out. A portion of your purchase will go to Jumpstart to help us buy children’s books for our preschool classrooms! Everything in the store qualifies for the bookfair, so it’s a great time to buy holiday presents or stock up your own reading collection while supporting early literacy.

In addition, you can purchase a children’s book and donate it to Jumpstart and our classrooms.

Jumpstart will also be hosting Children's Storytimes Saturday and Sunday at 1:30pm.

Our Basis for a Book Drive Corps member reading to children

Jumpstart Seattle at the University of Washington is seeking to add books to help create a vibrant, diverse library for the low-income preschool children we serve. Not only will this encourage children to develop a love of reading, it will also allow Jumpstart to send a message of thanks to our preschool partners for always making our volunteers feel welcome.

Succeeding in school begins with reading and children from low-income families are less likely to have mastered three or more skills of early literacy or early counting (West, Denton and Germino, 2000).

By the time they are in first grade, children in low-income families have gained 5,000 word vocabularies. In contrast, children from more affluent families enter school with 20,000 work vocabularies (Children's Defense Fund, 2001).

The result is that many young children enter school poised for failure before their school career has even begun. This is why Jumpstart Seattle connects University of Washington students as mentors and tutors in preschool classrooms in the Seattle area. This book drive will give our Corps members a wide array of books to read with children and help us to contribute to the classroom libraries.
