Introduction

Gene duplication and divergence is one of the prime movers of evolution, as witnessed by the pervasiveness of gene families in all non-viral organisms. Beyond the duplicate gene families that remain detectable today, it is likely that very ancient duplications gave rise to the earliest gene diversity, now obscured by the mists of time.

Though the importance of this process is widely appreciated, the mechanisms, patterns, and evolution of duplicate genes are not well understood. We use C. elegans as a model to study the evolution of duplications.
