Dr. Portin’s research and publications over the last decade have centered in the areas of school leadership and school improvement. In particular, he has examined current principal roles and how their roles are changing to meet new imperatives for improved student learning, effective preparation for learning-focused leadership, leadership for school improvement, and international policy trends in educational reform.
Dr. Portin recently edited a book with Michael Knapp, Joe Murphy, and Lynn Beck on "Self-Reflective Renewal in Schools" (2003). In addition, he was project leader and principal author for the Wallace Foundation-funded study, "Making Sense of Leading Schools: A Study of the Principalship" (2003), with Paul Hill and the Center on Reinventing Public Education at the University of Washington . Currently, Dr. Portin is a researcher for the seven-nation Leadership for Learning research project at Cambridge University exploring the links between leadership and student learning in middle schools.
