Shirley retired in 2001 from the Issaquah School District. Since then she has worked as a consultant to schools on civility and collaborative school cultures; with the Riley Group in research and evaluation for schools receiving Gates Foundation Grants; as a City University field supervisor for MIT interns and as a substitute/interim principal for the Issaquah School District. Before retiring, Shirley was principal of Maple Hills Elementary in the Issaquah School District for 13 years and before that at Garfield Elementary School in the Yakima School District. While at Maple Hills her school was included in two statewide reports studying effective elements needed for success on the WASL. She received the Issaquah Superintendent’s Catalyst Award for Leadership in 2000. Shirley worked as a substitute teacher and teacher in all elementary grades in the Yakima School District and Alexandria, Virginia Public Schools before becoming a principal in 1985.
