I am fulfilling this role as a "Teacher on Special Assignment" as I earn my credits for the principal's certificate. I am responsible for all the duties of assistant principal, except for those situations where a credentialed administrator's signature is needed. I am a leader on BISD's Assessment Training Team, which is responsible for the professional development of teachers in formative assessment practices to drive student learning. As an educational leader, I enjoy the inquiry process into problems/issues, and working with all stakeholders to identify needs, and work towards solutions. I have been a teacher for eight years, teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. For the last four years, I've taught 6th grade science and language arts at Sakai Intermediate on Bainbridge Island. I love the blending of literature with the scientific mind, and helping students relate both the factual and the esoteric through writing. My intentions are always to serve every individual in their learning process no matter where they may be in that process, and in turn to model inspiration and passion for learning.

My previous professional experience was when I worked for the University of Washington as a resource teacher developing and coordinating environmental health curriculum for schools in the area. I taught math and science at McClure Middle School and helped students explore science and math activities actively and creatively. When I first came to Seattle I worked for the Seattle Parks and Recreation where I helped design activities for kids after school and during the summer. Shortly after I came to work as a research assistant and a counselor for YouthCare (a non-profit private group in Seattle working to make life better for homeless kids) where I advocated services for homeless youth.

Kim Kinzer

I have taught English, writing, social studies, literature, mentor/advisory groups for the past ten and a half years in both middle school and high school. I have been immersed in the writing community in Seattle for the past 5-6 years and have pursued classes at the Richard Hugo House and at the UW's Puget Sound Writing Program.
I have taught a wide variety of classes-from U.S. Citizenship to University of Washington Composition in both a public and private setting. The first five years of my teaching career was spent with the Lake Washington School District teaching middle school and high school. For the past five and a half years I have worked in a Montessori Middle school environment, working with adolescents on writing, social studies, occupations and mentor groups. While working in the Montessori environment I have had the opportunity to travel to Montessori conferences to present workshops to other Montessori teachers on process writing and creative writing with adolescents. Currently I am teaching Writer's Workshop and social studies part-time while pursuing the principal certification at the University of Washington.

Professional Goal:
I am interested in the opportunity to continue to work with children and colleagues to help continue (or create) student-centered, instructionally sound and positive schools that meet all children's needs. I am very passionate about writing and helping students write well. I am interested in a position as an Assistant Principal in an elementary, K-8 or middle school. I am also interested in working at the district level to improve writing strategies and processes to help create more success for children with writing and language.

Later, I taught 8th grade social studies at RJ Grey Jr. High in Acton, Massachusetts (1992-94), and then moved abroad to teach 8th grade humanities at the International School Manila (1994-1996) and fall in love with Southeast Asia. Most recently, I returned to my hometown Seattle and taught 9th grade Pacific Rim Studies (LA/SS block) and established a nationally-awarded culminating project program (CAPstone: Citizen Action Project) at Kamiakin Jr. High in the Lake Washington School District (1996-2003). Co-authored "Creating Global Classrooms," Educational Leadership, October 2002.

Professional Goal:
I am seeking a middle school (or junior high) leadership position that will allow me to continue to pursue my interest in developing the teaching profession as one that puts teachers and good instruction at the forefront of school improvement.

Years after entering the field of education as a bilingual instructional assistant and high school girls soccer coach, I began my teaching career in 1992. In addition to teaching for over 10 years, I have consistently been involved in leadership, particularly in efforts to close the achievement gap. After earning a Master of Landscape Architecture degree (UW 1996), I have worked as a designer at the Washington State Department of Transportation for the past 6 years. In this professional capacity, I have had the opportunity to work closely with students on environmental projects.

Elementary or middle school principal in a public school. I am committed to strengthening schools through community involvement, and building meaningful partnerships that enrich learning.

Previous Experience:
I began my career teaching at Madison Middle School and have been there ever since. While at Madison I’ve not only had the privilege to teach fantastic students, I have also thoroughly enjoyed participating in the dynamic work of school transformation as a teacher-leader. I have served as a team leader, helped to lead the design work of the school renovation project, and served on the site council and academic achievement committee. As a member of many district level committees focused on supporting student learning I've had a chance to be an advocate for all of Seattle's students.

Professional Goal:
My goal is to become a school leader and serve as an advocate for all children so that each and every child can achieve excellence in learning. I want to help foster and lead school environments which ensure that the values of equity and excellence are demonstrated through the learning opportunities that are created for all children.
