As a historian of education, Dr. Beadie studies how the structure, experience and meaning of education have changed over time. Currently, her work focuses on schools, markets and the formation of social capital in the nineteenth century United States. She has written extensively on academies, and on the history of women in education, including both students and teachers. Dr. Beadie is also interested in what history can teach us about educational prospects and alternatives in our own day. Recent publications include Chartered Schools: Two Hundred Years of Independent Academies in the United States, 1727-1925 (New York: Routledge Press, 2002), and ’Moral Errors and Strategic Mistakes: Lessons from the History of Student Accountability,’ Kenneth A. Sirotnik, ed. Calling Public Education Into Account: Toward Responsible Concepts and Practices (New York: Teachers College Press, 2003).
