Internship Requirement

A 9-credit internship is required of all candidates whether or not they seek the Superintendent or Program Administrator Certificate. Sites can differ depending on this choice (museum educator, municipal office, non-profit, etc.). Students who enter the program with a valid superintendent certificate may transfer up to nine credits from their previous insitution, provided that said coursework occurred within 10 years of anticipated completion of the doctorate program and is approved by program faculty.

Educational Doctorate with Superintendent Certificate

To earn the WA State Superintendent Certificate, you must hold (or be eligible for) teacher or educational staff associate certificate and apply for the CORE (year 1) of the Leadership for Learning Program.

Educational Doctorate with Program Administrator Certificate

To earn the WA State Program Administrator certificate, you must complete an approved internship with a district office administrator and apply for the CORE (year 1) of the Leadership for Learning Program.

Educational Doctorate without Certificate

To earn the Leadership for Learning EdD without the Superintendent Certificate, it is not necessary for you to hold any Washington education certificates. Districts can hire superintendents without a certificate but most require the EdD and the certificate.
