Bacterial Burden and Seminal HIV-1 RNA Shedding in Kenyan Men

Funding: UL1RR025014 UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences

PI: Graham, Susan M.

Time Period:  6/1/2011 – 5/30/2012

The aim of this project is to determine whether HIV-1 RNA levels in semen are correlated with total bacterial DNA burden in semen, as measured by quantitative broad-range PCR, and the frequency of seminal detection of anaerobic organisms, coliform bacteria, and Mycoplasma species in order to link specific sexual practices and clinical findings to patterns of genitourinary colonization and HIV shedding.
