Concern for the safety of both mother and child is essential in ethical research involving pregnant women. In the context of the global HIV epidemic, determining what research to pursue involves balancing risks: research should not involve unacceptable risks to mother or child, but must allow for testing of urgently needed interventions for both women and children. Understanding the issues considered by women and healthcare workers is critical to developing ethically sound research and policy regarding the use of PrEP for pregnant/lactating women.
