My Interests

I am interested in large, general questions in evolution. I find experimental evolution—watching viruses and bacteria evolve in real-time—to be a fascinating way of exploring these questions. I previously worked with strains of the bacteriophage phi-6 that were genetically robust (meaning that their phenotype was maintained in spite of mutations) or genetically non-robust (mutations had a significant effect on phenotype). I asked whether the genetically robust viruses would also be robust for growth on bacterial hosts that the virus does not normally infect. This research has led me to questions about the role a changing environment can play in evolution and how the structure of interactions, either among genes or among organisms, can shape the evolution of a population.
