For novice beginners, it is recommended that students go to Korea after finishing two years of language study at UW. This is when the student has gained a fair amount of knowledge in the language and is ready to fully take advantage of the study abroad. For heritage beginners, one UW-year will provide sufficient preparation.
Study Abroad
Preparation
UW students have an opportunity to study the Korean language abroad and get UW credit.
Currently, two sister universities are available in Seoul, Korea: Yonsei University and Seoul National University (SNU).
For information on the application and credit transfer process, visit International Programs and Exchanges (IPE) at 459 Schmitz Hall.
You can also call 206-685-3511 (if you are on UW campus, dial 53511) or email the office.
If you are choosing another school, or if you are participating in a foreign study program so you may have credits transferred for a Korean major or minor in the future, be sure to get a pre-approval form filled out and signed by a faculty member in the Korean Language Program.
After-Study Evaluation
You will receive instructions from the International Programs and Exchanges Office. When requesting evaluation, Be sure to submit all study materials, including the textbook and other materials used as well as any projects and homework.
Depending on the hours and the content of the language courses you take in the sister universities, you will get credit for one of the following courses. Korean 145 satisfies the UW language requirement for graduation. The other two courses will count towards your VLPA credit.
If you are a Korean major or minor, contact the Asian Languages and Literature department student advisor for more information.
