synapse The junction between a nerve fiber of one neuron and another neuron or muscle fiber or glial cell; the site of interneuronal communication. As the nerve fiber approaches the synapse it enlarges into a specialized structure, the presynaptic nerve ending, which contains mitochondria and synaptic vesicles. At the tip of the nerve ending is the presynaptic membrane; facing it, and separated from it by a minute cleft (the synaptic cleft) is a specialized area of membrane on the receiving cell, known as the postsynaptic membrane. In response to the arrival of nerve impulses, the presynaptic nerve ending secretes molecules of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These diffuse across the cleft and transmit the signal to the postsynaptic membrane. 80 0.02 2 82.68 2.84e-04
cytoplasmic vesicle A vesicle found in the cytoplasm of the cell. 96 0.03 2 68.90 4.09e-04
cell fraction A generic term for parts of cells prepared by disruptive biochemical techniques. 631 0.19 3 15.72 1.00e-03
extracellular The space external to the outermost structure of a cell. For cells without external protective or external encapsulating structures this refers to space outside of the plasma membrane. This term covers the host cell environment outside an intracellular parasite. 921 0.28 3 10.77 2.92e-03
synaptosome Any of the discrete particles (nerve-ending particles) formed from the clublike presynaptic nerve endings that resist disruption and are snapped or torn off their attachments when brain tissue is homogenized in media isosmotic to plasma. 12 0.00 1 275.59 3.62e-03
integral to plasma membrane Penetrating at least one phospholipid bilayer of a plasma membrane. Also refers to the state of being buried in the bilayer with no exposure outside the bilayer. 996 0.30 3 9.96 3.63e-03
extracellular matrix A layer consisting mainly of proteins (especially collagen) and glycosaminoglycans (mostly as proteoglycans) that forms a sheet underlying cells such as endothelial and epithelial cells. The proteins are secreted by cells in the vicinity. 292 0.09 2 22.65 3.66e-03
protein serine/threonine phosphatase complex A complex, normally consisting of a catalytic and a regulatory subunit, which catalyzes the removal of a phosphate group from a serine or threonine residue of a protein. 23 0.01 1 143.79 6.93e-03
plasma membrane The membrane surrounding a cell that separates the cell from its external environment. It consists of a phospholipid bilayer and associated proteins. 1341 0.41 3 7.40 8.21e-03
mitochondrion A semiautonomous, self replicating organelle that occurs in varying numbers, shapes, and sizes in the cytoplasm of virtually all eukaryotic cells. It is notably the site of tissue respiration. 460 0.14 2 14.38 8.81e-03
membrane fraction That fraction of cells, prepared by disruptive biochemical methods, that includes the plasma and other membranes. 462 0.14 2 14.32 8.88e-03
