The Department of Defense planned to ship 4,320 tons of GB and VX nerve gas and other bombs, rockets, and artillery, through the state en route from Okinawa to Oregon. On May 23, 1970, Nixon canceled the plans, in response to civil suits to block the shipments and demonstrations against it, including a May 17, 1970 die-in staged by PANG. State Senator Henry Jackson also urged Nixon to cancel the shipment, arguing that Seattle had one of the highest rates of bombings from antiwar and left-wing guerilla protesters, and that the shipment would be a threat to the security of the state.
