Employment Discrimination and CORE's DEEDS Campaign, 1961-1964

Almost from its inception in 1961, Seattle's CORE chapter struggled against employment discrimination in Seattle's downtown businesses. CORE collected extensive documentation on hiring practices and racial discrimination and then attempted to use the information to negotiate with business management to bring about changes. When this failed, or moved slower than CORE thought was reasonable, they changed tactics to pickets, boycotts, and direct action techniques, culminating in the Drive for Equal Employment in Downtown Stores (DEEDS) in 1964. Though the DEEDS campaign failed, CORE continued its attempts to influence larger layers of African-American workers by turning its attention, in 1966, to segregation within labor unions. These documents from employment discrimination and CORE's DEEDS campaign are part of a special section of the Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project.
