ANTI-SCL-70 ANTIBODIES

CLINICAL UTILITY:

Antibodies to the basic nuclear protein, Scl-70, are seen almost exclusively in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS or sclero-derma). The antibody occurs more frequently in the diffuse form of PSS than in the limited CREST variant of scleroderma. Even though anti-Scl-70 is saline extractable, it is not routinely detected in the anti-ENA antibody test because of its positive molecular charge.

METHOD DESCRIPTION:

Double diffusion (Ouchterlony) is the method used to identify anti-Scl-70 antibodies in patient sera. The antigen is prepared by purification and concentration of a rabbit thymus extract. Results are reported as either positive or negative for anti-Scl-70 antibody.

REFERENCE RANGE:

Negative.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:

0.5 ml serum. Freeze.
