CRYOFIBRINOGEN

CLINICAL UTILITY:

Cryrofibrinogenemia refers to the presence of cold-precipitatable proteins in plasma but not in serum. Cryofibrinogen is a plasma protein complex whose presence in the peripheral blood is generally asymptomatic, but is sometimes associated with a variety of conditions. These include: malignancy, thromboembolic disease (usually in the skin, lung, and myocardium), or various inflammatory conditions. Rarely it is considered to be essential.

METHOD DESCRIPTION:

Cryoglofibrinogens are a complex of proteins present in plasma, but not serum, that have the property of precipitating in the cold and going back into solution at 37°C. The exact mechanism of precipitation is unknown.

REFERENCE RANGE:

Negative at both 3 days and 10 days for each sample type.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:

A 10 ml red top tube, a 5ml Blue top and a 5 ml green top are to be drawn and must be maintained at 37°C while clotting.
