CSF OLIGOCLONAL BANDING

CLINICAL UTILITY:

Although the detection of oligoclonal banding in the gamma region is not specific for any disease, the presence of CSF oligoclonal bands is characteristic of multiple sclerosis and is used to help establish that diagnosis. Examination of the CSF for the presence of oligoclonal bands is helpful because the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis can be difficult and supportive laboratory data are useful to the clinician.

METHOD DESCRIPTION:

Isofocusing and immunofixation with anti-IgG.The procedure visually compares the electrophoretic migration patterns of IgG in CSF and serum from the same patient.

REFERENCE RANGE:

When the bands present in the cerebrospinal fluid co-migrate with bands in the serum, the overall impression is negative for oligoclonal banding.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:

1. Spinal fluid (CSF)- 1.0 ml (0.5 ml min) Refrigerate for up to one week.
2. Serum: Serum - 0.5 ml (0.3 ml min.) refrigerate.
