Student Leadership Award
The Award
Named for one of Seattle's foremost civic leaders, the Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award recognizes individual students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, provided outstanding leadership in the community, and who are committed to continued creative civic participation.
The Carlson Student Leadership Award recipient will receive $2500 and be honored at the annual Spring Celebration on May 7, 2013.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award, candidates must be enrolled as a junior or senior at the University of Washington during the current academic year and working toward their first baccalaureate degree. The Award is open to students from all three University of Washington campuses.
Deadline
The application deadline for the 2013 Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award is Tuesday, April 2, 2013. Interviews with finalists will occur the afternoon of Tuesday, April 9th.
How to apply
Please email a complete application packet in PDF format to rvaughn@uw.edu by Tuesday, April 2nd. A completed application packet will include the following components:
- A cover sheet which provides your name, student number, and contact information (including mailing address, phone number, and email address).
- A current University of Washington transcript (unofficial is fine).
- A recommendation letter from a mentor who has been involved in or advised you in your civic leadership and public service activities. This mentor can be a community member, a personal mentor, or a University of Washington staff member, faculty member, or graduate student. Recommendation letters can be emailed directly from the author to rvaughn@uw.edu and should be received by April 2nd, 2013.
- A demonstration of yourself as an engaged community member and leader. This could take the form of an essay (1000 words maximum) or a combination of a shorter (500 word) personal essay and a brief visual or auditory representation of your civic engagement/leadership.
The selection committee is interested in learning about your conception and practice of civic leadership. Please address the following questions in your demonstration of community engagement and leadership.
- What is/are your project(s)? Put another way, in what way(s) have you demonstrated your civic leadership?
- What community issue(s) have you addressed through your public service activities?
- What resources have you built upon to address this issue/these issues (i.e. community organizations, public research, advocacy work, community councils, etc.)
- How do define civic leadership? What elements of civic leadership and public service have you demonstrated in your community engagement?
- How do you plan to use your civic leadership skills in the future?
