Fellowships & Awards

The University of Washington supports and recognizes student public service and leadership work through several fellowship and scholarship programs. The Carlson Center directly administers the following Fellowships & Awards:

Robert Lee Ellis Civic Fellowship
Designed for incoming students, Ellis Fellows are selected on the basis of financial need, dedication towards service, personal growth, and leadership development, and ability to make a 4-year commitment toward fulfilling Fellowship expectations. Ellis Fellows are selected in the first week of Fall Quarter and awarded annual scholarships throughout four years, growing from $2,000 to $5,000.

Carlson Civic Fellowship
The Carlson Civic Fellowship is focused on building capacity in community-based organizations and strengthening connections between the community and the University of Washington. Students are selected on the basis of their commitment to leadership development and community engagement, and supported through work-study awards and/or Americorps scholarships.

Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship
The Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship encourages a life-long commitment to public service by providing students with support for a proposed public service initiative. This support includes a monetary award (between $2200 and $4500) and a two-quarter community-based leadership seminar. Munro Fellows are selected at the end of Autumn quarter and are expected to enroll in the seminar and complete their public service project during Winter and Spring quarters.

Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award
Available to Junior or Senior undergraduate students, the Carlson Leadership Award recognizes individual students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, provided outstanding leadership in the community, and who are committed to continued creative civic participation with a $2500 scholarship and recognition at the annual Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership.

Mary Gates Leadership Scholarships
In addition to our directly administered programs, Carlson Center staff are involved with the selection of Mary Gates Leadership Scholars. Available once a year to eligible undergraduate students through a competitive and rich application process, these scholarships encourage students to develop their leadership abilities through an activity or project they are passionate about. Through practical experience, personal reflection, and community interaction with peers and mentors, Mary Gates Leadership Scholars expand their leadership capacity, developing confidence and useful skills. The scholarship award is $4,000, disbursed over two quarters in $2,000 increments.
