Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Working alongside individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings.

On Monday, January 21, 2013, people from around the country honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by transforming his life and teaching into civic action addressing needs in our community. In connection with this National Day of Service and legacy of service, the Carlson Center partnered with the United Way of King County to connect 1,700+ volunteers from the UW and King County with close to 100 service projects hosted by local nonprofit organizations. The MLK Day of Service Kicked Off at the newly remodeled Husky Union Building (HUB) with some inspirational words from our UW leadership.

The Dream is Still Alive: 50 Years and Counting
Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, 8:00am - 10:30am at the William W. Philip Hall
The 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast is built around celabration of the 50 years since Martin Luther King's historic and moving "I Have a Dream" speech. This gathering honored the message of those empowering words as well as the progress they inspired. The breakfast featured community recognition by way of the Dream Alive Awards as well as local perfoming artists. Keynote speaker, Carolyn McKinstry, will share her experiences as a survivor of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in 1963 and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. McKinstry's experiences are relevant to today's challenges and successes towards the realization of King's "Dream" 50 years later.

UW Bothell: "Empower the Future" on Saturday, January 19th
The UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College held the 4th Annual MLK Day of Service, titled, "Empower the Future" on Saturday, January 19th, 2013 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, including service opportunities with Seattle Children's Hospital, the Miracle League, Threads and Treads, Northshore Senior Center, and Riverside East Retirement Home.
