General Linguistics Graduate Applications Requirements
The Graduate School no longer accepts paper applications.

ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED via the Graduate School web site before the Linguistics Department December 15th deadline for domestic applicants and November 1 for international applicants. Applications are accepted for the Autumn quarter only. Please note that applicants are responsible for tracking their application materials by logging on to the electronic online Graduate School application. The Department of Linguistics does not offer conditional admission pending submission of some required documents. All required information must be present before an application will be considered.

Required Application Materials
1. Electronic Application and fee.

2. Statement of Purpose: Please write a one or two page statement presenting your objectives as a graduate student as well as any other information you feel would be relevant to your application.

3. Sample of Your Work: Ph.D. applicants should send a copy of their M. A. thesis and/or papers or conference presentations of high quality. Although this is not required for admission, M.A. applicants are also encouraged to send a sample of their academic work or conference presentations.

4. Letters of Recommendation: Two or three letters, preferably from people familiar with your academic work and especially with your work in linguistics courses. If you are applying for the Ph.D. program, three letters of recommendation are necessary. You will be asked as part of the on-line application process to provide email addresses of your recommenders so they can upload these recommendations.

5. Upload electronic copies of transcripts from prior schools into the online application site either as a PDF file or scan the transcript. PLEASE NOTE: If offered admission, all international applicants, permanent residents, green card holders, and domestic students with degrees from schools outside the U.S. must also send official paper transcripts to:

If offered admission, domestic students with degrees from the U.S. need not send official paper transcripts at the time of application, but will be required to do so later if admitted to our program.

GRE scores are required of all students. For native speakers a score of 600 is typically expected on both the verbal and quantitative sections. Scores can be outweighed by other factors, however, especially for non-native speakers.

TOEFL Scores: International students must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 580 on the paper-based test, 237 on the computer-based test (TOEFLC), or 92 on the TOEFLiBT in order to be admitted to the Graduate School without the necessity of taking English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. For more information please see Grad School Memo 8 at:

http://www.grad.washington.edu/policies/memoranda/memo08.shtml

International students who have received a bachelor's degree from an institution in the United States or another English-speaking country are not required to take the TOEFL.
