Honors Program in Linguistics
There are a number of ways for Arts and Sciences undergraduates to graduate with honors at UW.
If you wish to graduate ''With College Honors in (some field),'' you generally have to have decided to do so before entering UW, as you are required to participate in the Arts and Sciences Honors program as well as a departmental honors program in order to receive this honor.

However, if you successfully complete the requirements of a departmental honors program alone, you will graduate ''With Distinction in (some field)''. Other possible honors bestowed upon graduation include summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude. These are awarded on the basis of GPA. (The changing GPA cut-offs for each category are announced every spring.)

The following are the requirements for graduation ''With Distinction in Linguistics/Romance Linguistics''.

• GPA of 3.3 overall; 3.6 in Linguistics/Romance Linguistics
• Coursework required for the regular major
• One additional year (three quarters) of study of one of the languages selected for the regular major. For General Linguistics majors, you may test out of up to 6 quarters of a language (or 3 quarters of one language and 3 quarters of a second language), but regardless of level of proficiency, you must attend three quarters of a language class.
• Attendance of a graduate seminar in Linguistics/Romance Linguistics, which may be taught by a regular faculty member, an adjunct, or a visitor, no later than one quarter before the final quarter of study before graduation. You should be aware of the 400-level prerequisites for the 500-level seminars in selecting classes to satisfy the 400-level course requirement.See the Undergraduate Adviser for more information.
• You will write a term paper during the seminar. The next quarter you will revise and/or expand the term paper into a senior thesis, enrolling for 3 credits of LING 499 under the supervision of the faculty member who taught the seminar (or the most appropriate faculty member, if the seminar was taught by a visitor). This portion of the honors program can be modified in individual cases. For example, if you wished to pursue a topic which is not ordinarily covered in one of our seminars, or if you perhaps do substantial work with a faculty member on one of his or her own research projects, you could sign up for two 3-credit quarters of LING 499 with that faculty member in lieu of the senior thesis requirement.
