The Romance Linguistics Major

Admissions requirements

Although the department prefers that prospective majors present a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher, it will accept students who meet the following minimum qualifications:

1. Completion of at least one year of college course work in a single Romance language.

2. Completion of at least one writing (W) course and two quantitative and symbolic reasoning (Q/SR) courses, with a minimum grade of 2.0 in each and a cumulative GPA of 2.50 in the three courses.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications may appeal and may submit materials in addition to transcripts clarifying any aspect of past course work. See adviser for information on appeal procedure.


The Romance Linguistics Major

The following is an outline of the required courses for the Romance Linguistics major:

Introductory course in linguistics. (4-5 credits)

  • Ling 400 or a 200-or 300-level introductory course with permission. See Introductory Classes page.

Core Courses (20 credits):

  • Phonetics I (LING 450)
  • Phonology I (LING 451)
  • Syntax I (LING 461)
  • Syntax II (LING 462)

Romance Core Course (5 credits):

  • RoLing 402

Language Courses (15 credits):

  • 15 credits at the 300 level or higher of one Romance Language. The following restriction applies: translation courses and courses taught primarily in English do not fulfill this requirement. This excludes the following courses:

FRENCH: 378, 445, 472, 482, 483, 484, 485, 486, 487, 488

SPAN: 317, 318, 320, 332, 408

ITAL: 318, 319, 341, 480, 481, 482

PORT: 335

Elective Courses (20 credits):

Senior Essay (2 credits):

  • RoLing 490 -- Essay on a linguistic problem of the student's choice, written under the supervision of a faculty consultant.

Total credits: 67 credits


Many of the RoLing, FrLing, and SpLing courses are offered only once every other year, so be sure to plan your schedule accordingly. Be sure to consult with the Undergraduate Adviser before planning a program.
