University of Washington Language Advisory Board (UWLAB)

The University of Washington Language Advisory Board (UWLAB) is an interdepartmental coordinating, sponsoring, and advisory body for the furtherance of second-language study and applied linguistics at the University of Washington. The UWLAB itself offers no instruction (though our executive board is composed largely of faculty members in the languages), and is distinct from the Language Learning Center (though that center's concerns touch ours at several points).

We are currently involved in other projects to further three main interests: Graduate study in Applied Linguistics; articulation and outreach (e.g., activity in the Puget Sound Academic Alliance for Foreign Languages, an association of language teachers at all levels of instruction); and enhanced coordination of language instruction at the UW.

Governance and Operations:

The UWLAB is directed by Professor Julia Herschensohn from the Linguistics Department. The UWLAB, which meets at least once per term, comprises members drawn from the University's language and linguistics departments and the Language Learning Center.
