Profile: Edison Amah
Edison Amah: Aeronautics and Astronautics Major
Edison Amah is a UW alum who majored in aeronautics and astronautics engineering. His area of research was computational fluid mechanics. He had a research stipend to study a simulation of flow over a cylinder. For his research, a virtual boundary method was applied to the numerical simulation of a uniform flow over a cylinder. The force source term, in the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, guarantees the imposition of the no-slip boundary condition over the body-fluid interface. These equations are discretized, using the finite differences method. The immersed boundary is represented with a finite number of Lagrangian points, distributed over the solid-fluid interface. A fine Cartesian meshed grid point is used to solve for the fluid flow equations based on how the solution converges. The key idea was to propose a method to calculate the interfacial force without unplanned constants that should usually be adjusted for the type of flow and the type of the numerical method, when this kind of model is used. For his research, this force was calculated using the Navier-Stokes equations applied to the Lagrangian points and then distributed over the Eulerian grid. The advantage of this approach was that it enabled calculation of this force field, even if the interface was moving or deforming. The lift and drag coefficients and the Strouhal number, calculated for the immersed cylinder, were compared to the experimental and numerical results.
Besides being an LSAMP Scholar, Edison was also a McNair Scholar, and a member of various academic organizations and recipient of awards like, NACME Scholar, Costco and Boeing Scholar, and NSBE. He plans on going to graduate school, and earning a doctorate degree in aeronautics with a specialty in propulsions and fluids. He looks forward in creating a program in future, which would help kids from low-income households with passion for aircrafts expand their understanding in the field.
