Dislocations

Back to Case study
Dislocations Lesson/Tutorial  Dislocations are a type of defect in crystals called line defects.

An edge dislocation may be described as an edge of an extra plane of atoms in a crystal structure. An area or zone of tension and another area or zone of compression are usually present around a dislocation. the distance or displacement of atoms around a dislocation is called the slip vector.

A screw dislocation is similar to a spiral garage ramp. The axis of the ramp is the imperfection line. There are shear stresses present at a screw dislocation.
