Quench cracking

Back to Case study
Quench cracking Lesson/Tutorial The situation in which cracks form because of volume changes during quenching.  When a material is rapidly cooled, the outer layers transform before the middle.  Because a material changes volume when it is transforming, quench cracks can occur when the volume changes within the material are inconsistent, therefore, causing internal stresses.
