Welcome Class of 2013!

On behalf of business communication club officers and members, I would like to welcome you to Foster MBA program. We are very excited to have you among us and hope that Foster MBA will be a rewarding experience for you.

The mission of BizComm is to facilitate and enhance our member’s MBA experience by providing opportunities to learn, practice and grow their communication skills and develop strong networks for advancement of their careers.

Communication skills are vital for any career you chose and MBA program is the perfect platform to start learning the tools and techniques that will aide you lifelong. In a study conducted by Job Outlook (link), employers cited the ability to communicate effectively as the top quality they want in an ideal candidate. Another 20 year study, that followed the progress of Stanford University MBAs, revealed that the most successful graduates (as measured by both career advancement and salary) shared personality traits that distinguish good communicators: a desire to persuade, an interest in talking and working with other people, and an outgoingm ascendant personality. As students, these achievers developed their communication skills by choosing courses such as business writing, persuasion, selling ideas, negotiation, and speaking.

BizComm organizes various workshops and speaker series throughout the year focusing on oral, written, visual and technological skills. Here are some potential events planned for the coming year:

Technical Skills: Workshops on SQL, MS Access, Tableau, Advance Excel and PowerPoint.

Soft Skills – Speaker series on project management techniques, negotiation strategies, running effective meetings, delivering the “Message” and internal communications.

Behavioral and case interview practice sessions with industry experts and second years for internships and post MBA opportunities.

Networking events with second years, alumni and industry experts.

I want to encourage you take advantage of these events by joining the BizComm club and actively engaging yourselves in what we do. We are positive that you will make this club and Foster an even better place by bringing in your fresh ideas and experiences. Feel free to contact me (sovina@uw.edu) and other BizComm officers if you have questions or suggestions.

Welcome again!
