Women are redefining the traditional mba path
Check out WiB member Nazgul Kemelbek's project on how women are redefining the traditional mba path.
"Just a decade ago MBA meant Wall Street and high power finance, but today women are redefining traditional MBA path and choosing to use business tools and management skills to make a difference in their workplaces and communities. "

Final Newsletter of the 2010-2011 School Year
Hello Everyone,
This is the last newsletter of the 2010 - 2011 school year. It has been a fantastic year with amazing events put on by a phenomenal board. Under the leadership of Helen Seliverstov and Crystal Wu, Women in Business has grown in size, relevance, and importance among the MBA Clubs. Congrats to the outgoing board for all your hard work. The incoming board has large shoes to fill, but we look forward to building upon the foundation you laid and have great things in store for next year. Thank you for everything!
To the graduating class of 2011: You will be missed! If you are interested in maintaining contact with WiB, please email Karen Appel to get on the mailing list. Good luck in your career endeavors in the future, and get excited for the Alumni Networking event in January 2012!
To those remaining for more years at Foster: keep an eye out this summer for information on upcoming events, a new Facebook page, and other exciting things in store. If you come across any interesting Women in Business articles over the summer, please send them to me - I'll happily disperse good articles over the course of the summer.
Everyone have a fantastic summer and thank you for everything this past school year!!!
Women in Business in the News:
- Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook
- "You should also know there are are external forces out there that ar holding you back from really owning your success. Studies have shown - and yes, I kind of like studies - that success and likability are positively correlated for men and negatively correlated for women. This means as men get more successful and powerful, both men and women like them better. As women get more powerful and successful, everyone, including women, likes them less." This is merely a snippet of the recent Commencement Speech she provided at all-womens institution, Barnard College. Read the entire transcript here.
- Young Female Employees: A Risky Investment?
- "Women, especially younger women, continue to flee finance in record numbers, announced a FINS report earlier this week... But, according to several women quoted in the report, these numbers are motivated by a difference in persuasions, not the nature of the industry or the vagaries of working in a mal-dominated field. Instead, women of the 21st century don't feel the need to break the boys' club as their predecessors did." Read the entire article here.
- How more Wall Street Women can Rise to the Top
- "People on Wall Street don't make their fortune by churning our widgets, but by providing capital and wielding power. A forum designed to help women in finance obtain and maintain that clout has taken off." Read of the resources available to women in finance.
- The Sponsor Effect: Why Qualified Women Don't Make it to the Corner Office
- "... It's been clear for a long time that there is a glass ceiling in the upper echelons of corporate America. For women who did make it to the corner office... the path has meant many sacrifices, aggressive personal marketing, and an active sponsor. And that is what the Center for Work-Life Policy's latest study aims to highlight: Not a male conspiracy, but rather, 'a surprising absence of male (and female) advocacy' for women." As you enter your internships, or career, if you meet an inspiring business woman who has a fascinating story to tell, do not be shy about sharing! Please email our VP of speakers, Mary Schlaphoff.
Thanks for a great year!!
Instead of a female empowerment quote, here are some cheesy graduation quotes for those departing Foster:
"The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change."
~ Maya Angelou, American Author and Poet
"You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world."
~ Tom Brokaw, Television Journalist and Author
"You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact, and remember that life's a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left. And will you success? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed). Kid, you'll move mountains!! So... be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Al Van Allen O'Shea, you're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way!"
~ Dr. Seuss
