The development of the transparent structure of lens cells is a unique problem in biology that involves symmetry at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels and highly coordinated interactions between proteins and cells. Our most recent work is on the differentiation of lens fiber cells in zebra fish. Separate studies on on the molecular interactions between proteins responsible for development of normal transparent structure and for the loss of transparency in aggregation diseases that include cataract, neurodegeneration and cardiovascular disease.
