Registration
Trainees must be registered as full-time graduate students for all quarters
they are supported by the Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant. For
Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters, full-time registration is at least
10 credits. During Summer Quarter 2 credits is considered full-time status
for graduate students on training grants. Trainees are asked to limit
their registration in Summer to 2 credits if their program permits.
Course Requirements
Each trainee is required to complete 4 modules of the Conjoint series,
with 6 modules strongly recommended. If the course requirements have not
been met prior to starting on the training grant, the trainee must fulfill
this requirement in the first year on the training grant.
Monthly Trainee Meetings Requirement
Trainees must attend the monthly meetings for students funded by the
Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant. Participation of trainees is
required as a condition of support by the Cell and Molecular Biology Training
Grant. Meetings will be held once per month from October to May, at a
time of the students' choosing. Meeting times and dates will be coordinated
through the email system. Two students from the second and third year
trainee groups will present at each meeting.
Annual Retreat Requirement
During the Spring Quarter (May) a one-day retreat is held for trainees,
advisors, and other faculty and students interested in the program. In
a relaxed setting, trainees have the opportunity to present their research,
and learn about the work of other students. Students in their final year
of support give talks on their research; other students give poster presentations.
All students submit abstracts of their research projects for the printed
program. Participation of trainees and advisors is required as a condition
of support by the Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant.
Biomedical Integrity Lecture Series Requirement
Each summer the School of Medicine sponsors the Biomedical Integrity
Lecture Series. Trainees are required to attend four lectures and one
small group discussion during their tenure on the Cell and Molecular Biology
Training Grant. Videotapes of the lecture series are available at the
Health Sciences Library if a lecture is missed. Students should make a
note of the lectures they attend, as they will need to include the dates
in their yearly progress report.
Publication Requirement
It is important that trainees acknowledge support received from the
training grant when they publish a manuscript on research begun or completed
during their appointment. Acknowledgements should be listed as follows:
"(This investigation or your name/initials) was supported in part by
Public Health Service, National Research Service Award, T32 GM07270, from
the National Institute of General Medical Sciences."
Or abbreviate:
"(This investigation or your name/initials) was supported in part by
PHS NRSA T32 GM07270 from NIGMS."
Please email citations of all publications (including abstracts, book
chapters, and journal articles) to the MCB Office. Do not email references
in progress; wait until publication.
New NIH Publication Law (4/7/08)
As of April 7, 2008, the NIH requires that all journal articles also be submitted to the digital archive PubMed Central. Upon acceptance for publication, all articles that emerge in whole or in part from NIH funding must be submitted to PubMed Central by April 7, 2008 if NIH pays your salary. (For CMB TG trainees, this is always the case.) All peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports and reviews are covered by the policy.
Many journals will automatically submit your article to PubMed Central for you. A list of journals that will automatically submit your work is provided at http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process_journals.htm (this list may be incomplete). If your journal will submit for you, no further action is needed on your part. However, the UW recommends that you confirm that the article has been submitted by the journal.
If you are NOT submitting to a journal that will automatically submit for you, you will need to submit it yourself using the NIH manuscript submission system.
Every time we submit a renewal we will ask you for any publications. We will need from you either the ID from the NIHMS system or the PubMed Central ID along with the usual information (author list, title, etc.)
Evaluation
Continued support by the Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant is
contingent upon maintaining progress considered satisfactory for trainees.
During Spring Quarter each year, trainees will submit a report describing
their progress, and a faculty committee with a representative from each
participating department will evaluate each trainee's academic and research
progress. The trainee and advisor will be notified of the committee's
recommendations and will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns
with the Evaluation Committee members. |
