The MCDM degree provides a balanced curriculum that explores the creation and management of digital content, as well as policy and ethics. It addresses the demand for professionals trained in the management and production of digital media (any medium that uses digital interactive technologies as the engine for communication). MCDM is one of the few degrees in the country that focus on media creation and managing within the industry.
The Department of Communication began the MCDM program in academic year 2001-2002. We have over 100 graduates who have incorporated new-found skills into their current jobs or have used this program as a stepping stone to a new job.

While attending the University of Washington, MCDM students gain a comprehensive understanding of design principles, economics, history, law, policy, research, and the social implications of technology. Students have the opportunity to develop a personal and professional network of people with similar interests.
The cohort-style program is limited to 25 students per year. This structure fosters both real-time supportive relationships and long-term networking.
In addition to our UW faculty and teaching professionals, we have an advisory board which offers career information, support for teaching, guest speakers, and research opportunities. The advisory board consists of executives of major digital media businesses nationally and globally, as well as government officials involved in supporting the digital media industry. It has included executives from Microsoft, RealNetworks, SeattleTimes.com, and USAToday.com.
