PhD Program in Health Services

A maternal and child health emphasis is available through the PhD Program in Health Services. Students choose this area of emphasis after at least one year in the program.

The maternal and child health curriculum provides balanced, comprehensive instruction in the determinants and disparities of population health, and United States health care systems and health policies. It also provides rigorous methodological training, giving students the skills to conduct interdisciplinary research with practical applications for policy and practice.

Graduates of the PhD program with an emphasis in maternal and child health typically are involved with infrastructure building (eg, needs assessment, information systems, standards development), population health monitoring (eg, very-low-birth-weight births, children without health insurance, adolescent suicide), and applied prevention research (eg, program planning and evaluation). They work at a systems level to complement the direct services of clinical practice providers.
