Autumn 2008

Then and Now

Sometimes an idea will revolutionize scientific perceptions in a given field. Maybe the idea was right, or maybe it turned out to be a misconception. Either way, a select group of papers have changed thinking in science more so than the vast majority. Monday Night Meeting this quarter (autumn 2008) will attempt to examine a few of these. Our format this quarter will focus less on the precise investigation of one individual paper, and instead examine the central idea presented within, and trace its impact on the field for which it was written. Some of the questions we will attempt to answer include the central concept and results of the chosen paper, the impact it had at the time, and how it has changed what has gone both before and after. The paper may have turned out to be right or wrong, but looking at in the context of history is really the only way to know…
