Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine

Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine

Stem cells occur naturally in our bodies. They have the remarkable ability to turn into any kind of tissue the body needs. With its remarkable ability to regenerate an entire body from a severed arm, the starfish is a potent symbol of the promise of stem cell research. Today, science is learning how to harness this ability — to use the power of our own biology to cure common and deadly diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes, and many more. Already, for example, we are growing live, beating heart cells that someday may be used to replace tissues damaged by heart disease. The Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM) at the University of Washington has been formed to take advantage of key research already occurring at the University in this area. Gifts to this fund will support initiatives at the institute.

These gifts also will help UW Medicine take advantage of a new, University-wide matching initiative called Students First. Under the Students First program, money raised for scholarship can be matched — 50 cents on the dollar — once a minimum amount of $100,000 is raised from contributors.

Hearing Regeneration Initiative Fund

Hearing Regeneration Initiative Fund

Most of the progressive hearing loss we suffer as we age results from the destruction of tiny cells in the inner ear. In humans, once these inner-ear hair cells are destroyed, they do not come back. In birds, however, these crucial cells are known to regenerate. Scientists at the University of Washington are leaders in the effort to make human hair cells regrow. This fund supports research in this area. The Oberkotter Foundation will match every gift to this initiative dollar for dollar. The Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center is a national leader in this area of research.

Harborview Mission of Caring Fund

Harborview Mission of Caring Fund

Harborview provides the highest-quality health care for people from all walks of life. Although more than 37 percent of its revenue comes from privately insured patients, Harborview also provided $112 million in charity care to King County residents in 2006. This contribution has more than doubled since 2002 and, with the number of uninsured dramatically increasing continues to trend upward. Too often those who qualify for our charity-care program are children, the working poor, and people who used to have some type of government assistance but are no longer eligible. The health of our entire community is greatly affected by the ability of Harborview to fulfill its mission. Gifts to the Harborview Mission of Caring Fund help support this safety net, assuring top-quality health care to people in need, regardless of their ability to pay.
