Report to Donors 2006–2007
Message from the Dean
During the past year, the University of Washington School of Medicine celebrated its 60th anniversary, giving all of us who care about this great institution an opportunity to reflect on our progress and our hopes.
When the School first opened its doors in 1946, few could have imagined the giant this institution would become. Now one of the top academic medical centers in the country, with federal research funding second only to Harvard’s, UW Medicine is a national leader in research, medical education, and patient care. UW Medicine includes two highly ranked medical centers, a top-rated school of medicine that serves the five-state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho), an excellent cancer-treatment program in partnership with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center, and a network of neighborhood clinics. UW Medicine research programs fuel a biotechnology enterprise that helps drive the economy of our entire region, and our ability to translate research into improved therapies and cures is expanding treatment options for people throughout the Northwest and beyond.
As the stories in this report demonstrate, we have not achieved this stature alone. We have relied on the unwavering generosity of visionary friends and contributors, some of whom you will meet in these pages. We are very fortunate to have your support. With your help, the future for UW Medicine is extremely bright — for discoveries and cures; for the future of scientific collaboration; for the next generation of health professionals; for all the possibilities of the next 60 years.
Thank you for your partnership and support.
Sincerely,

Paul G. Ramsey, M.D.
