Message from the Executive director

Lynn K. Hogan“So much of science now is one little sliver at a time,” says former Cisco Systems executive Don Listwin. But as he points out, that approach doesn’t work very well in tackling major medical problems. Problems like cancer require a larger view.

That’s why Listwin, the founder of the Canary Foundation, structured the foundation not only to fund scientists, but also to promote their collaboration.

This kind of expansive thinking is a theme found in the stories in this report, which highlights contributions made over the past year.

In these pages, you will read about supporters of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, who are laying the foundation for a new wave of medical discovery at the University.
You will meet a graduate of the UW School of Medicine who made a visionary planned gift to scholarship and a patient grateful for Harborview Medical Center’s eminence in burn and wound care.

In another story, you will read about associates at Saltchuk Resources, who created a professorship in memory of a beloved business partner. And you will get to know one of the School of Medicine’s first African-American graduates, an accomplished physician who gave generously to the scholarship that bears his family’s name.

Contributors like these do more than support the mission of UW Mission. With their vision and dedication, they become our valued partners. We are grateful to them and to all who share our vision of a healthier future.

Thank you for your generous collaboration.

Sincerely,

Lynn K. Hogan
