Report to Donors 2006–2007

Sources and Use of Private Support

UW Medicine ended fiscal year 2006–2007 with a near record-high number of donors: 18,369. Only once in our history have we received gifts from more donors in a single year. More than one-third of those were donors who chose to give to UW Medicine for the first time, demonstrating that more and more members of the communities we serve are choosing to become our partners in improving health and changing lives. We are very grateful for the trust they have placed in us.

Another gratifying trend is the major increase in giving by faculty and staff across the University of Washington. In the previous fiscal year, this group gave $1 million. This year, UW faculty and staff actually doubled their giving, for a total of more than $2 million.

The charts on this page illustrate the amounts given by individuals and organizations, including family foundations, as well as the amount UW Medicine received in private grants. Also shown are the ways in which our donors earmarked their giving to current-use and endowment funds.

Endowment funds. Endowed funds create a permanent source of revenue. Once invested, the fund’s income is applied to programs at UW Medicine. In years with market gains, some income is reinvested so that the principal continues to grow in perpetuity, providing a steady stream of support. In fiscal year 2006–2007, donors contributed nearly $13 million to endowed funds, and more than $19.6 million was disbursed from 404 endowment funds to support UW Medicine programs.

Current-use and facilities funds. Current-use funds give UW Medicine flexibility in addressing pressing needs and new opportunities. The funds also enable UW Medicine to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and improve ongoing programs. In all, our contributors allocated more than $91 million to current-use funds in 2006–2007. In addition, donors gave more than $2 million to facilities funds in 2006–2007.

In 2006–2007, UW Medicine received nearly $21 million in outright gifts and bequests from alumni, friends, faculty, and staff. More than $85 million was received from corporations and foundations — over $15 million in gifts and more than $70 million in private grants. In all, more than 18,000 people and organizations supported UW Medicine in the last fiscal year.

Uses of Private Voluntary Support

All gifts made to Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, the University of Washington School of Medicine, and UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics are allocated to one of two basic funding categories: current use and endowment. Each category is vital in helping UW Medicine fulfill its mission of research, teaching, and patient care.
