Jamal K. Gwathney, M.D. ’99, MPH

“I level the playing field,” says Richard H. Adler. An attorney specializing in brain trauma and spine injury cases, Adler helps families deal with insurance companies, competency issues and court cases, as well as helping them gain access to proper medical evaluation and treatment. When families are under this much stress, he says, “there’s the need to serve as a true advocate.”

Adler supported the Lystedt family as they navigated Zackery Lystedt’s injury and recovery. He drafted the Zackery Lystedt Law, later adopted into law in Washington state. And then he did something more: with his wife, Donna M. Cruse-Adler, and legal colleagues Michael E. Nelson and Frederick P. Langer of Nelson Langer Engle PLLC, he created the Zackery Lystedt Sports Concussion Endowed Fund at UW Medicine. The endowment supports the Seattle Sports Concussion Program’s efforts.

In helping create the endowment, says Adler, “I wanted the mission of the work we did to live on — and given the commitment, skill and knowledge of doctors at UW Medicine and Harborview, there is no better place to have this happen.“
