Research Program:Dr. Fang's general research interests focus on the field of human globin gene regulation, especially the delineation of the molecular basis of fetal hemoglobin synthesis using human stem cell and transgenic mouse models. Current studies focus on: a) Testing the hypothesis that the variable human g-globin gene silencing in the adult is the consequence of a dynamic equilibrium between euchromatin originating in the LCR and heterochromatin originating in the g-globin gene promoter; b) Delineating the cis control of the globin gene switching and the structure function relationships in the beta-locus control region (LCR). c) Screening the epigenetic changes that related to the globin gene regulation in the whole genome range during developmental stages; d) Developing approaches for in vivo induction of fetal hemoglobin in the adult.
