Immigration Related Movies & Recordings

In support of this year's UW Common Book - Luis Alberto Urrea's The Devil's Highway: A True Story - the Libraries Media Center has put together a page that lists immigration related movies, documentaries, TV programs, and sound recordings. World Day for Audiovisual Heritage!

Today, October 27, is World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the day designated by UNESCO to promote awareness of our audiovisual heritage. Archives around the world are organizing events that bring their collections to broader public attention. World Day is organized under the auspices of the CCAAA (Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations) an umbrella organization of archival organizations.

IMDB offers streaming movies

OK, so this is not late breaking news, but check this out:

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) finally hopped on the streaming video train and has embedded full-length movies and television shows on the site. Now U.S. users can click on the bright gold "Watch It" button and instantly check out 6000 different programs. Most of the content is derived from Hulu, Sony, CBS, and a variety of independent filmmakers, with other indie filmmakers invited to upload and join the party

"The Girl in White" - October 23rd at 6:30pm

Don't miss this opportunity to see the 1952 movie "The Girl in White" starring June Allyson. The subject of the film is Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer, the first woman selected to be an intern in a New York City hospital in 1902. Dr. Barringer overcame prejudice and many other challenges in her quest to become a physician.

The movie is the first in the film series associated with the "Changing the Face of Medicine" exhibit on display in Suzzallo 102. The exhibit planning committee made special arrangements to bring this rare film to campus. Admission is free.

Hors d'oeuvres and other refreshments will be served at 6:30pm. The film will run from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in Kane Hall 110. Hope you can join us!

Crocodile Cafe Collection has Arrived

The Crocodile Cafe Collection—a series of some 3,000 hours of live recordings made by soundman Jim Anderson has arrived at the University of Washington Ethnomusicology Archives. In collaboration with the Libraries Media Center and Music Library, the Archives will preserve and make these unique materials available for in-library listening. Much descriptive and audio processing work needs to be done before they will be available for access. For more information about the collection contact John Vallier. New Media - October '08

Hey. Autumn quarter is underway and we have a month's worth of new titles to report. This month brings us things like Metalocalypse, Heroes, The butcher boy, and The Bugs Bunny Road Runner movie. We've got some Kinks, Beastie Boys, and Beck. And we've got some local albums from All-Time Quarterback, Rocky Votolato, The Prom, and Aqueduct.
