Mullins named chair of microbiology
James Mullins has been named chair of the Department of
Microbiology, subject to approval by the UW Board of Regents.

Aagaard Tower dedication and lecture take place May 24
The BB-Tower of the UW Health Sciences Center will be formally
named the Aagaard Tower May 24 in memory of the second dean of
the School of Medicine George N. Aagaard and in honor of his
widow, Lorna Aagaard.

Smith receives career achievement award
Ronald H. Smith, clinical professor of medicine at the
Billings Clinic in Montana, has received the Ralph O.
Claypoole Sr. Memorial Award from the American College of
Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine. The award
was presented April 22 at the organizations' annual meeting in
New Orleans.

Lancet series features articles by UW faculty
John Loeser, professor of neurological surgery and anesthesiology, opens an eight-week series on pain management in tomorrow's issue of The Lancet,
dated May 8, 1999.
Also contributing to the series are Dennis
Turk, professor of anesthesiology, who explains how to evaluate
someone who has pain, and C.
Richard Chapman, professor of anesthesiology and psychiatry and
behavioral sciences, who discusses the psychological and physiological
aspects of suffering.
